Father, I dreamed of you this night

Father, I dreamed of you this night

Father, I dreamed of you this night

Tonight we danced together
Father
on the streets of the world
our steps in unison
on our lips a single song.

We didn’t dance the waltz
but a rhythm, very remote
perhaps the rhythm of Italian emigrants in Argentina
perhaps that of the Indians of America
or perhaps the rhythm of African natives
or that of the Aboriginal Australians.

It was our rhythm
our dance on the streets of the world
steps in unison
on our lips a single song.

I danced with you looking forward to the future
your body in front of mine
a shield to protect me from storms
as well as in my life your love.

On this way we all should dance
on the streets of the world
steps in unison
on the lips a single song.

Dancing the same rhythm of the life
following its pulse
swaying to its call
flexible as young shrubs
sinuous as panthers.

Because this is our only life
this is our only dance
this is our only rhythm
our only skin
our only voice
our only way
our only chance of being human
creatures between creatures
voices between voices
passions between passions.

Because this is our only dance
on the streets of the world
between discordant steps
and on our lips
myriad of songs.
